Georgia College and State University is located in Milledgeville, GA, just 30 miles northeast of Macon. The 40 acre campus sits downtown nearby the former state Capitol – Milledgeville served as the capital of Georgia from 1804-1868. The University was founded in 1889 as Georgia Normal and Industrial College to prepare young women for teaching or industrial careers. It became coeducational in 1967; in 1996, the Board of Regents approved a change of name to Georgia College & State University and designated the school as Georgia’s “Public Liberal Arts University.” The compressed campus features architecture that is reminiscent of early the 19th century antebellum period. Among the notable alumni is the CEO of GEICO Tony Nicely.

Academic Programs

Georgia College and State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 35 majors. Presently, there is a limited offering of online programs, all within the Graduate school. The university is comprised of four colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, J. Whitney Bunting College of Business, John H Lounsbury College of Education and College of Health Sciences. The school is noted for Nursing, Music and Teacher Education; the largest programs on campus are in Business, Education and Health-related fields. GCSU combines “classroom knowledge with real-world experience. So, learning doesn’t stop after class. In fact, it has just begun at that point. Service learning, study abroad, internships, undergraduate research and leadership organizations are some of the ways we bring together knowledge and life. With four specific colleges, each student will find the resources and support to reach his or her academic goals at Georgia College.”

Student Life

There are over 5900 undergraduate students enrolled in Georgia College and State University, most of whom live on campus in one of 7 residence halls or suites and apartments. There are dozens of clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the blue and green Bobcats field teams in 8 sports and participate in NCAA Division II competition. Students are encouraged to apply their education and talents to solve problems in the community. Georgia College students are natural leaders who inspire people and often discover new opportunities and new directions for their lives after college. Volunteer work is a Georgia College legacy that continues to instill pride and make both the community and the students better for it.
