Christopher Newport University is a public 4-year school located in Newport News, VA, close to the James River. The school was founded in 1960 as an extension of the College of William and Mary in nearby Williamsburg and named for the captain of the Susan Constant, one of three ships owned by the Virginia Company that transported colonial settlers to Jamestown in 1607. The school obtained independence from its parent college in 1977 and reached university status in 1992. The 250+ acre campus contains multiple quads and green spaces and features buildings keeping with the local historical architecture in Georgian Revival style. Among notable alumni is the “Snuggie” inventor Allison Lerner.

Academic Programs

Christopher Newport University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s degrees in over 80 fields of study. The University is comprised of 4 colleges and schools: Luter School of Business, College of Arts and Humanities, College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences, College of Social Sciences and 5 Academic Centers including the Center for American Studies, Center for Community Engagement, Public History Center, Judy Ford Watson Center for Public Policy and The Reiff Center. Specifically noted for Music and Theatre, the largest programs on campus are in Biology, Psychology and Social Sciences. Per the Mission Statement, “The mission of Christopher Newport University is to provide educational and cultural opportunities that benefit CNU students, the residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the nation… We are committed to providing a liberal arts education that stimulates intellectual inquiry and fosters social and civic values. CNU students acquire the qualities of mind and spirit that prepare them to lead lives with meaning and purpose. As a state university, we are committed to service that shapes the economic, civic, and cultural life of our community and Commonwealth.”

Student Life

There are over 5,000 undergraduate students enrolled in Christopher Newport University, most of whom live on campus in class-year-specific residence halls. The University sponsors over 225 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the royal blue and silver Captains, led by Captain Chris, field teams in 11 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. The annual calendar includes ‘Symphony Under the Stars’ where Christopher Newport hosts the Virginia Symphony for a concert on the Great Lawn and under the stars. “Integrity, credibility, ethical leadership and management of the highest order are the principles Christopher Newport University aspires to achieve every day. These core values are absolutely essential to the University’s successful attainment of our mission, which is to provide educational and cultural opportunities that benefit CNU students, the residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the nation.” Students are held to the following Honor Code: ‘On my honor, I will maintain the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and personal responsibility.
